Forest and crater

When you say “Africa” or “Kenya”, we believe that many Europeans or northern hemisphere liver think about wide savanna, sun and wild animals. Even knowing that midden in Africa there are mountains and green, we really were surprised to find ourself in a forest (with pines🌲 and lot of green!) at about 2500 masl.

After a short drive from Nairobi, we stopped at The Forest 🌳. It’s a local attraction mostly known for ziplining and where you can amuse yourself with horse rides, bike rides, paintball and hiking.
It was a nice change from being seated in our 4-wheeler for many kilometers.
While Kate had her fun on the children’s zipline, accompanied by Dario, Yara enjoyed an hour horse ride with Stefi.

After the different activities you can eat at the restaurant on site

The structure also offers camping solutions and so we camped in the forest, gently supervised at night by two guards. In Kenya it is common post a guard for the night. Maasais guard the camp, and the camp’s management will also give you clear orders on the do’s and don’ts for your safety. With the guards guiding the camp, you will be safe.

From The Forest we drove about 100 km through unpaved and bumpy roads until we reached the entrance to the Mount Longonot National Park and made our way to the Oloonongot crater.

With the children, you can consider 1.5 hours of hiking until you reach the crater’s rim.
The hike itself it’s not difficult but you have to be careful. The path is steep (400 meters altitude difference), narrow and uneven, with boulders, stairs and sand.

Here again, a guide was highly recommended (almost imposed) to us, in order to master the short hike. Again, it was not needed but it is customary to do so and that we respect. We are not particularly fan of such “tourist’s obligations”, but we are also not against supporting the locals and their businesses.
